Knee bar submissions (straight legbar)

[Knee bar from side control www.submissions101.com]

A kneebar (technically known as a straight legbar) is a leglock which hyperextends the knee. The basic kneebar is performed similarly to an armbar by holding the opponents leg in between the legs and arms so the opponent’s kneecap points towards the body. By pushing the hips forward, the opponent’s leg is straightened, and further leveraging hyperextends the knee. A variation of the kneebar is done similarly, but instead of holding the leg with the hands, the opponent’s foot is pushed behind one armpit. By pushing the shoulder backwards and pushing the hips forward, a greater amount of force is applied to the knee, and the lock becomes much more difficult to escape.

BJJ Mount Escapes

The BJJ mount (known as tate shiho gatame in judo) is the most dominant position for ground fighting because the fighter on top has a myriad of attacks at their disposal. Chokes, armlocks, strikes -- they can all be set up from the mount. That’s bad news for the fighter on the bottom. The good news is that whenever the top fighter moves to secure a submission or throw a strike from mount, there’s always a momentary (although sometimes tiny) opening for the bottom fighter to escape.

Escaping Mount is One of the Most Important BJJ Skills. Because being mounted is so dangerous, effective mount escapes are some of the most important tools for a Brazilian jiu-jitsu player to have. Taking away an opponent’s mount attacks means that and they won’t be nearly as dangerous on the mat.
