Civilizations around the world have created many forms of martial arts. Throughout time the lines between some of these styles have become blurred. Kickboxing and judo are two popular fighting styles still used in today’s combat sports.
Judo is a martial art that was invented in Japan in the late 1800s. Kano Jigoro is credited with creating judo after years of practicing Jujutsu. In 1882, Jigoro combined some of the throwing and grappling moves of jujitsu with his own. Judo is known as a grappling martial art. Judo techniques include throws, joint locks and set-up strikes. A primary component of the sport is using your opponent’s weight and balance against him.
Kickboxing is a martial art that has spread around the globe. Japan is considered its birthplace. Promoter Osamu Noguchi came up with the sport and the name in the 1950s. Since then, kickboxing has branched out into other styles, including French and American kickboxing. Kickboxing is a stand-up or striking style of martial art. Practitioners are trained to use their fists, elbows, knees, shins and feet as weapons.
Many well-rounded fighters use both judo and kickboxing. Judo is used for control and takedown training, while kickboxing is about striking and defense.
